What is the difference between M-Bus and MODBUS communication ?

M-Bus Communication: M-Bus is a communication protocol used between meters and the central data collection system or Pre-Payment unit. Widely used on new projects where the building infrastructure can be designed accordingly.M-Bus is available on a wide variety of gas, heat, electricity, and cold/hot water meters.

•Transfer of energy or consumption data

•2-Wire hard-wired system or Wireless

•Max. 250 meters per network master (multiple masters possible)

•Up to 2000m cable (2km) per master

Main advantage:

It’s More flexible then MODBUS (EU standard) with multiple manufacturers meters interchangeable within the network.Wireless capability,Robust data collection,Simple principle - easy to install and it’s Bi-directional communication for setup and updates

Disadvantages:

It’s Costly to change if not installed correctly from the design phase, it’s Sensitive on electromagnetic interference and more difficult/costly in retrofit applications

Modbus Communication: Modbus is a serial communication protocol developed by Modicon published by Modicon® in 1979 for use with its programmable logic controllers (PLCs). In simple terms, it is a method used for transmitting information over serial lines between electronic devices. and almost 40 years later, it is still used on many industrial sites. It is pretty cool that this openly published, free, simple protocol has been adopted by so many manufacturers to exchange information.

•a method used for transmitting information over serial lines

•one Master and up to 247 Slaves

•each with a unique Slave Address from 1 to 247

Main advantages:

multiple instruments are connected to the same Modbus network. No instrument supports all instrumentation network protocols, but almost all of them support Modbus. By choosing Modbus you have a good chance of avoiding compatibility problems and future upgrade problems.

Disadvantages:

Modbus is restricted to addressing 247 devices on one data link, which limits the number of field devices that may be connected to a master station (once again Ethernet TCP/IP proving the exception).

We have summarized the differences between M-Bus and MODBUS (Wired and Wireless), IVY METERING is the manufacturer of electricity meter and electronics components, we have not only kwh meter with Modbus- RTU, but also smart power sensor with M-bus.
